MHRD+UGC+NAAC+AICTE = ? ? ?

1.Central University

2.State Univeristy

3.Deemed Univeristy

4.Private University.

5.Foregin University ( in Future)

Above is the classification of Universities that Indian Higher Education Sector follows. The recent blanket ban on 44 Deemed Universities and talk shows that were aired on NDTV made me to think into what actually it is required for an Insitution to get a Deemed University Status. In layman terms, I understood that an Institution which is serving the education sector by providing good Quality Education complemented by research activities consistently over a period of years can be considered to be given a Deemed University Status. In addition to this there might be many other benchmarks, rules & regulations that UGC looks into to before conferring a Deemed Univeristy status.

If we take a look at some of the Colleges which were conferred Deemed University Status, none needs Rocket Science to understand that Vitamin-M is the only parameter that UGC has looked into to confer a Deemed Univ status to them. Thanks to the Yashpal Committee/Tandon Committee which highlighted the fact of mushrooming DUs' across the Country and the compromise on Quality of Education. Both the Committees have highlighted the facts that some of the Deemed Universities lack basic infrastructure, flout the rules on no.of intake,no faculty, offering odd branches of Studies, Capitation fees and many more.Considering all those parameters,no doubt that some of the Institutions should be scrapped of their Deemed University Status. There is no second thought on that.

But,if the same benchmark/parameters are applied to State Universities as well then how many of the Arts & Science/Engg Colleges that are affiliated to State Universities or say State Universities themselves satisify those parameters ?

Does that mean State Universities are going to de-affiliate all those colleges ?

Does that mean MHRD is going to revoke State University Status to all those State Universities which are not upto the mark ?

Does that mean the system of Affiliation/Accreditation/State Universities itself is crap ?

I feel that the concept of Deemed University is not wrong but just the implementation of the Concept is.Scrap the erring Deemed Universities left and right but not the Deemed University concept and also exercise due diligence while conferring a DU status in the future. At the same time it will be double the nice if Govt.takes a look at the Quality of the State Universities and take some strict corrective measures.Atlast,it is all about Education.

It is high time for the Indian Govt to take a crystal clear stand on Private Universities which can bring in a lot of Education-Industry Colloboration which is the need of the hour.

Fate of pass-outs from IISER uncertain.

Blunder after Blunder from MHRD.Why don't they consider such bills or acts on priority and sort it out irrespective of the Parliament Session disruptions. For info,no Private Organisation/body/Trust Profit oriented or Non profit oriented is allowed to have the word  "India" in their name.Such is the importance of tagging the word "India".If the state of educational instiutions like "Indian Instituion of Science Education and Research" is like this,I really doubt the Govt's commitment to cleanse the Education system in the Country.
